How To Exfoliate Safely For Every Skin Type

How To Exfoliate Safely For Every Skin Type

All the expensive beauty tools and accessories for the skin would be rendered ineffective if you’re not indulging in one (if not the most) important skincare step: exfoliation.

It is something you should never deny yourself with, whatever skin type you may have. If you do it correctly, you would reap all its amazing benefits – including never having to feel guilty about buying luxury skincare products for your face and body.

1. Unclogging pores:

Cleansing isn’t enough to take away all the surface debris, dead cells, and makeup residue – but exfoliating does so effectively.

2. Acne prevention:

When pores are unclogged, there’s no room for whiteheads and blackheads to grow which can lead to acne. If you want to prevent zits from making your skin a regular breeding ground, exfoliate at least once a week.

3. Even skin tone:

Rough texture, dark complexion, or hyperpigmentation issues? Exfoliating on a regular basis will help your skin appear to look smoother, softer, and more uniform-looking.

4. Better absorption of skincare products:

The nourishing ingredients of the most expensive skincare products that money can buy won’t be as effective if pore-clogging material, oil, and dead cells are blocking your skin. When you exfoliate, you remove all barriers and prep your skin to absorb the nourishing goodness of creams, serums, and gels you’re going to slather on it.

5. Increasing cell turnover:

When you exfoliate, it stimulates oxygen-rich blood to nourish the skin’s surface and to remove toxins on a cellular level that will lead to plump, firm, and dewy skin.

The exfoliation process is a little bit different for every skin type.

Dry skin

Products containing glycolic acid and AHAs are essential to help remove dead cells without causing micro-tears on your skin. Follow up with moisturizer to bring back hydration as well as sunscreen because dry skin type is more sensitive to UV rays after exfoliating.

Sensitive skin

A salicylic acid-enhanced exfoliator should be used as gently as possible to prevent redness and inflammation. Skip the use of devices, even cloths or brushes – rubbing in circular motions with bare hands will do.

Oily skin

An exfoliating device works best with a charcoal-based product as it can effectively remove stubborn layer of buildup and impurities that can be the culprit for oil production in the first place.

How often should you exfoliate?

The main purpose of exfoliation is to remove all layers of clutter off of your skin so more doesn’t always mean better. You want to achieve a smoother texture and a glowing complexion – not to feel a sting or turn beet red.

If you have normal to combination skin, at least twice a week is recommended for optimal results. For oily skin, not less than four times a week will ensure that your skin won’t be a breeding ground for oil production. Acne-prone skin and sensitive skin can do with once-a-week exfoliating.
