Preservatives in Skincare Products: The Dirty Dozen to Avoid

The skincare industry has an ugly secret. There are product manufacturers who promise short-term beauty at the expense of your health. If you want naturally glowing skin, watch out for these 12 preservatives that belong to the list of skincare dirty dozen.

1. TRICLOSAN

A class of synthetic antibacterial chemical associated with toxins, usually found in deodorants, toothpastes, and shaving creams, that can lead to disruption of thyroid function and can cause colon cancer.

2. PHENOXYETHANOL

It is one of the most popular preservative choices for skincare products and beauty brands because of its stabilizing components and ability to bond well with other ingredients at a wide range of pH levels. Although up to 0.6% of this ingredient can be found in most formulations, constant exposure can lead to eczema, allergic reactions, and other problematic skin conditions.

3. SILOXANES

It’s what manufacturers use to allow personal care products to foam or bubble up, and is also used to keep cosmetic brands soft and smooth.

4. PHTHALATES

These are used as stabilizers in skincare products and beauty brands to eliminate cracking and stiffness or to act as a binding agent among other ingredients.

5. PEG (Polyethylene glycol)

It is a petroleum-based compound that acts as emulsifier (help unlike ingredients blend well) and emollient (to soften and moisturize skin) but also paves the way for undesirable ingredients to be deeply absorbed into the skin.

6. TALC

If not purified, this mineral powder which is often used in eye shadows and face powders can be contaminated with asbestos that is linked to lung and ovarian cancers.

7. MINERAL OIL

It is a highly purified petroleum by-product that can clog the pores and can reduce the skin’s ability to fight toxins.

8. BUTYLENE GLYCOL & PROPYLENE GLYCOL (PG)

Also known as surfactants, these gaseous hydrocarbons are used for herb extraction and for better skin absorption of its accompanying ingredients.

9. ALUMINUM COMPOUNDS

These are toxic chemicals that are associated with degenerative diseases usually found in deodorants to prevent sweat from being released.

9. ETHANOLAMINE COMPOUNDS

Names such as DEA (diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine), and TEA (triethanolamine) are added as ingredients in cosmetics and personal care products to create a creamy, blended texture.

10. FORMALDEHYDE-RELEASING COMPOUNDS

These can be referred to as DMDM hydantoin & urea in shampoos, liquid baby soaps, makeup removers, and lotions to help prevent microbe growth.

11. PARABENS

The names Methyl, Butyl, Ethyl, and Propyl belong to this group of preservatives that keep the products from being contaminated by fungi and bacteria but can trigger breast cancer cells and life-threatening reproductive problems.
